UGANDA PARTICIPATES IN THE 17TH SECTORAL COUNCIL ON ENERGY, PETROLEUM, AND MINING AT EAC HEADQUARTERS
The Uganda Consulate in Arusha participated in the 17th Sectoral Council on Energy, Petroleum, and Mining at the East African Community (EAC) Headquarters in Arusha (10th to 14th February 2024). The meeting gathered key stakeholders to discuss regional energy, petroleum, and mining policies.The Ugandan delegation included officials from the Ministry of East African Community Affairs, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Electricity Regulatory Authority, and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The delegation actively contributed to discussions on regional energy and mining policy development.
The Council began with the Senior Officials' Session, which concluded on February 12, 2025, after key policy deliberations and report compilation. On February 13, 2025, the Permanent Secretaries' Session reviewed the report, focusing on strategies for enhancing regional cooperation in the energy and mining sectors.The meeting concluded on February 14, 2025, with the Ministerial Session, led by the Minister of State for Energy, Hon. Okaasai Opolot. Consul General Ambassador Anne Katusime and representatives from various Ugandan ministries and agencies participated. The session culminated in the finalization and signing of the Ministerial Report.
A key outcome was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda on the Nsongezi Hydropower Project. This agreement marks a significant step in regional energy collaboration, promoting energy production and sustainable development.The Uganda Consulate in Arusha remains dedicated to supporting Uganda’s active participation in regional initiatives that advance progress and integration within the East African Community.
